The Role of Footwear in Self-Management of Knee Osteoarthritis
Presenter:
Professor Hinman is a physiotherapist and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the Centre for Health Exercise & Sports Medicine within the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne. Her area of research is knee osteoarthritis (OA), in particular, the development and evaluation of non-surgical and non-drug treatments for this condition and conduct of clinical trials to test the effects of new treatments. Exercise and footwear interventions are particular areas of expertise and a major focus of her research. She has a large body of peer-reviewed papers and has received over $10 million of research funding for her work, including both NHMRC and ARC support.
Description:
Abnormal biomechanics play an important role in knee osteoarthritis pathogenesis, and footwear has the capacity to modify knee joint biomechanics. Recent research has focused on identifying which shoes may be optimal for people with knee OA, in order to reduce medial knee joint load and potentially alleviate osteoarthritis symptoms. This webinar will highlight recent research in this area, and discuss which footwear choices may be best for people with knee osteoarthritis to self-manage their symptoms.
